international music/dance scene

Postby d-dansei on 2002-04-22 Mon 02:58:58

Any comments on the international music/dance scene of Japan....

Is anyone here into creative dancing in hiphop/house
such as popping/locking etc.

Whats the scene like in the big clubs?

In Tokyo, most of the hiphop clubs play only commercial stuff (ie; DMX, Jay-Z and such). Breakers are everywhere though...and they break to some weird stuff. I often see them in train stations breaking to rock music. Just last night there were a couple guys breaking at the drum n base night I went to (alas, only once a month). I don't do that stuff so I can't tell you specifics.

I do a bit of popping/locking/liquid and have started to get into the grounded stuff like windmills, and also some tumbling and wushu-type spins.

From what I gather the Japanese scene for this sort of thing is thriving - cant wait to see what the place has to offer.

yeah, I have been into that kinda dance (well it has
just developed)but not any b-boy stuff and have developed my own style over
about 2-3 years. Kinda from dancing at raves and at
hiphop clubs plus at home.

Where I live, there aren't many good dancers around so
hoping to get with a cool crowd of people and keep at
it!

what's the experimental side of things like? are there very many dj's playing idm/laptop/glitch?

i have to get rid of this awful handle.

DrumnBase isn't popular but there are 2 clubs in Tokyo that have a monthly night. If you get placed anywhere near Tokyo, check out Womb in Shibuya on the last friday of the month. It's the nicest club I've been to in Tokyo. Most are really small or just big warehouses with no style. Unfortunately (for me anyways), by far the most popular music at clubs is hard house and hard trance. I finally checked out Harlem in Shibuya (crap, maybe it was Shinjuku) and I had an alright time. Everybody really goes all gangstad up and the girls are all hoed up, so there's nice stuff to look at...so many damn attractive women here. Anyways, mostly commercial hiphop but some good stuff (played the popular japanese hiphop too and the early biggy smalls singles and some new Jay-z, which I actually like).

sup i spin dnb, mostly dark techstep but i fool around
with ambient acid jazz sometimes...anyway i lived in
tokyo going to school for a while and it took some time
before i was able to hook up with people to spin with. I
was at a college there, so i started finding junglists
through a dj and mc club at the school...most of the dnb
djs i ran into outside of the circle i knew from school
were experimental, nothing too steppy mostly just
ambient stuff. cool to drink a cocktail and chill with but
not to bust out with some steps. theres a scene but its
small even in tokyo but there were a couple weeklys
and monthly events i can't remember the names of
them its been two years. most of the poppers i found
sucked but that made me feel good about my limited
skills. i went to a grooverider show where there were
some ill dancers though...big names come through
tokyo, osaka now and then go to those parties to find
fellow poppers and junglists hopefully you'll find from
them what weeklys are in your area or at least people to
chill with. i'll probably bring a record bag but i'm not
going to bring my tables...i didn't last time and was able
to find a couple bars that let me spin on the weekends.
but again that was tokyo i don't have experience living
anywhere else.
as far as you househeads i have nothing to say.
